Internal Security
The primary challenges and security focus of internal security are different than those of perimeter security. Internal security focuses on different protocols and must take a different approach to defining and organizing security rules. Internal security also implies higher performance requirements.Potentially dangerous protocols that are primarily used only for LAN applications are typically disallowed at the perimeter gateway.
Another difference is in the approach to access control. At the perimeter, administrators typically want to block all that is not specifically allowed. Inside the network, because of the greater number and complexity of applications, administrators start with a philosophy of allowing all that is not explicitly disallowed.
